Practice Valuation

Know what your accounting practice is worth.

Practice Valuation provides specialist valuations for Australian accountants in public practice.

Led by Colin Simkin, we bring national practice-sale experience together with rigorous financial analysis to support succession, partner changes, mergers, restructures and value improvement.

100% focus on accountants

The value of an accounting practice depends on how its earnings are generated and whether they can continue under different ownership.

We examine the economics behind your fees: the cost of replacing a working principal, the strength of client relationships, staff capacity, service profitability and the obligations a successor would inherit.

Colin has scrutinised, presented and negotiated the successful sale of accounting practices nationally through Practice Succession, often on an earnings-multiple basis.

That experience informs the questions we ask and how we interpret transaction evidence.

It is supported by his Registered Business Valuer qualification and recognition as the recipient of the AIBB RBV Academic Award 2026.

How we work

A Streamlined Process

The ownership question.

For a detailed valuation, we agree on the brief around the questions that matter to your decision:

  • What is the specified business or ownership interest worth at the relevant date?

  • What earnings remain after allowing for the roles and costs needed to operate the practice?

  • Which assumptions and risks have the greatest effect on the conclusion?

  • How have relevant market evidence and ownership rights been considered?

  • What should you and your advisers address before proceeding?

The report and the discussion of findings connect those answers to your circumstances. Whether you are a sole principal or part of a multi-partner practice, the scope begins with the decision you need to make.

Your key decision.

  • Succession or sale. Understand your position before setting expectations or entering negotiations.

  • Partner admission, retirement or merger. Establish a consistent basis for considering ownership interests and contributions.

  • Restructure. Define the assets or interests to be valued and coordinate the work with your tax and legal advisers.

  • Value improvement. Establish a baseline and prioritise the changes that could strengthen future value.

You can commission a valuation without deciding to sell.

A Practice Valuation engagement does not appoint Practice Succession to market your practice.

What are you receiving?

The scope matches the decision. An indicative appraisal can support early planning; a detailed valuation provides a fuller analysis and report for an agreed purpose.

We explain the methodology, material adjustments, assumptions and limitations, then discuss what the findings mean for you.

Before work begins, you receive written engagement terms that set out the scope, fee basis, information required, and expected timetable.

Know where you stand.

An approaching partner retirement, a proposed restructure or a change in your practice's operating model can make an old value assumption unreliable.

The 2026 tax changes also make it timely to review ownership plans and the valuation evidence your advisers may need.

Our tax reform overview distinguishes legislated changes from proposals and explains where valuation can assist.
